Egypt

Like most people I have been following the events in Egypt closely. I even went to the Egyptian Embassy in London on Saturday ( a most exhilarating if at times scary experience).

Right now in Tahrir (Victory) Square in Cairo among those still out demonstrating, there are pro Mubarak supporters armed and dangerous and shooting at people. Reports say some have been collared and disarmed and their first line out of their mouths is that they have not been paid! Quite illuminating really; must be that they have. If that is true is shows how weak pro Mubarak forces are, again, something that is not surprising. Still this is something the pro democracy movement has to contend with.

The organised workers, like the those involved in the production and movement of steel have been crucial in making sure the revolutionary movement has been as successful as it has been so far.

On Tuesday, yesterday, there were eight million people on the streets and an almost complete work stoppage. It's like saying this; we have power, us workers and we can show you this too; we will not work under your rule Mubarak, we are the people and want change. New unions have been formed.

At this moment in Tahrir Square and in other parts of the country it is a matter of arresting and stopping the pro Mubarak thugs, then looking at how progress is regarding his (Mubarak) shifting ... I am praying for the people of Egypt who are making this brave stand; making history.

  1. Message from the Cairo conference:-

    Appeal for international solidarity
To all the peoples of the world… To the hundreds of thousands who demonstrated against capitalist globalization and neo-liberalism… To the millions who came out against war and imperialism… To the world’s workers and toilers… To the free writers, intellectuals and artists of the world… To all the people with free conscience … We call upon you to act in all possible ways to salvage the leading forces of the Egyptian revolution in Al-Tahrir Square in Cairo… A massacre is being prepared now… Thousands of thugs and under-cover policemen are being mobilized under the supervision of the butcher Mubarak and the leading figures of his regime. They are now attacking the demonstrators… They are now throwing Molotov cocktails and tear gas bombs against the peaceful demonstrators… There are now 500 injured people… And there is confirmed information that the thugs will attack the square en masse late at night after turning of the lights in the area. They intend to perpetrate a massive massacre… We call upon all the honest people to act in all ways… Demonstrate at once… Spread the news of the massacre in all the corners of the world… Press your MPs and politicians and all the free civil society organizations to take decisive positions… long live the Egyptian revolution… Long live the international solidarity

  2. Mubarak's Last Card (from the Cairo conference)

Though Mubarak's regime takes its last breaths it still begs for life resorting to thugs and thieves who form his rescue teams to abort the ِpeaceful Egyptian revolution and wreak havoc and murder.. Perhaps what happened yesterday in Tahrir Square stands out as an ugly witness to the extent of weakness of the regime and helplessness.
Here we point out to the million and a half police forces who exhaust most of Egypt's resources since the regime fears opposition while it doesn't pay any attention to the neighboring Zionist State.
The whole world saw on live TV the criminals associated with Mubarak attack the peaceful honest protestors on horseback and riding camels, using weapons, throwing molotov, shooting live ammunition in the practical absence of the military forces that stand observing as if from a balcony, a scene that shows the extent degeneration that the regime has reached.
Then it is a war..the last battle of the regime before it leaves the arena to rightful rulers .. and leaves the power to the people the source of all authorities
But the people who surpassed their fears, conquered their executioners and revolted in the face of the most powerful machinery of oppression and tyranny risking their lives will not halt their revolution.
The Egyptian are changing the face of history and writing the end of Mubarak the dictator with the blood of their martyrs

  3. Statement of the Revolution Socialists, Egypt

Glory to the martyrs! Victory to the revolution!
What is happening today is the largest popular revolution in the history of our country... and of the entire Arab world. The sacrifice of our martyrs has built our revolution and we have broken through all the barriers of fear. We will not back down until the criminal 'leaders' and their criminal system is destroyed.

  4. Call to Egyptian workers. Statement from the Revolutionary Socialists, Egypt:

The demonstrations and protests have played a key role in igniting and continuing our revolution. Now we need the workers. They can seal the fate of the regime. Not only by participating in the demonstrations, but by organising a general strike in all the vital.industries and large corporations...

The regime can afford to wait out the sit-ins and demonstrations for days and weeks, but it cannot last beyond a few hours if workers use strikes as a weapon. Strike on the railways, on public transport, the airports and large industrial companies…! Egyptian Workers! On behalf of the rebellious youth, and on behalf of the blood of our martyrs, join the ranks of the revolution, use your power and victory will be ours!

    Form revolutionary councils urgently.

This revolution has surpassed our greatest expectations. Nobody expected to see these numbers. Nobody expected that Egyptians would be this brave in the face of the police. Nobody can say that we did not force the dictator to retreat. No...body can say that a transformation did not happen in Middan el Tahrir.

What we need right now is to push for the socio-economic demands as part of our demands, so that the person sitting in his home knows that we fighting for their rights... We need to organize ourselves into popular committees which elects its higher councils democratically, and from below. These councils must form a higher council which includes delegates of all the tendencies. We must elect a higher council of people who represent us, and in whom we trust. We call for the formation of popular councils in Middan Tahrir, and in all the cities of Egypt.

Statement of the Revolutionary Socialists, Egypt, on the role of the army:

Everyone asks: Is the Army with the people or against them?

The army is not a single block. The interests of soldiers and junior officers are the same as the interests of the masses. But the senior officers are Mubarak's men, chosen carefully to protect his regime of... corruption, wealth and tyranny. It is an integral part of the system...

This army is no longer the people's army. This army is not the one which defeated the Zionist enemy in October 73. This army is closely associated with America and Israel. It's role is to protect Israel, not the people... Yes we want to win the soldiers of the revolution. But we must not be fooled by slogans that 'the army on our side'. The army will either suppress the demonstrations directly, or by restructuring the police to play this role.
